How Far Ahead Should You Book Your Celebrant?
August 2026 · by Nicole Webster

This one comes up in nearly every first conversation I have, and there's usually a bit of anxiety behind it — a worry that they've left it too late, or a suspicion that they're being told to rush.
So let me give you the real picture, including the bit most people don't realise.
The legal minimum is one month
Australian law requires your Notice of Intended Marriage to be lodged with your celebrant at least one calendar month before the ceremony. That's the floor. Anything less and we simply can't marry you, no matter how much everyone would like to.
So if you're reading this five weeks out from a date you've set — you're fine. Genuinely. Let's talk.
What most couples actually do
In practice, most of my couples book somewhere between six and twelve months ahead. That's not because the paperwork needs it, but because it gives us room to do the good part properly — a relaxed chat about your story, time to shape the ceremony, space for you to think about your vows without a deadline breathing down your neck.
Twelve months is comfortable. Six is easy. Three is entirely doable.
The dates that go first
If your heart is set on a Saturday between October and April, book earlier rather than later. Sydney's spring and summer Saturdays are the ones that fill, and they fill well ahead.
The same goes for anything falling on a long weekend, Valentine's Day, or a date with a nice pattern to it. Those get claimed early every single year.
Midweek and winter dates are a different story. There's usually room, and often more flexibility all round — venues, photographers, everyone.
If you're on a short timeline
Short notice happens more often than you'd think. A visa deadline, a family member who's unwell and shouldn't wait, a couple who simply decided on a Tuesday that they didn't want to wait any longer.
None of that is a problem. I've married couples with four weeks' notice and it was every bit as personal as one planned across a year. If you need to move quickly, just tell me — I'll be straight with you about what's possible.
One thing worth doing early
Before you lock anything in, have a conversation with your celebrant. Not a booking — a chat. You're going to be standing in front of everyone you love with this person, and it matters that they feel right.
That conversation costs nothing and tells you almost everything.
Where I'm at
I'm currently taking bookings for late 2026 and into 2027, and the warmer Saturdays are the ones going first as always.
If you've got a date in mind — or you're still deciding and want to know what's possible — get in touch and let's have a chat about it.
