Why More Couples Are Renewing Their Vows

Why More Couples Are Renewing Their Vows

There's something different about a vow renewal, and it took me a few years to work out what it was.

At a wedding, two people promise each other a future they can only imagine. At a renewal, they've lived it. They know exactly what they're promising, because they've already done a decade or three of it. That changes the weight of every word.

Why couples do it

Anniversaries are the obvious one — ten years, twenty-five, fifty. But they're not the most common reason in my experience.

More often it's couples who came through something. An illness, a hard few years, a stretch where it wasn't certain. They get to the other side and want to say so out loud, in front of the people who watched them get there.

Some renew because their first wedding wasn't what they wanted. A registry office rushed through, a day organised by someone else, a ceremony that never felt like theirs. This is the do-over.

And some simply want a party with a reason.

There's no legal side to it

This surprises people. A vow renewal isn't a legal ceremony — you're already married, so there's no paperwork, no notice period, no witnesses required.

Which means it's completely free-form. No Monitum, no required wording, nothing I have to say. The whole ceremony is yours to shape however you like.

What tends to go in one

Because there are no rules, couples get creative. The ones that land hardest usually include something about the years in between — not just the promises, but what actually happened.

Children often play a part, which is something a first wedding can't offer. I've had grown-up kids give readings, and small ones carry rings with enormous seriousness.

Some couples re-read their original vows before making new ones. That one gets everybody, every time.

Where and how big

Entirely up to you. I've done renewals in living rooms with six people and on harbour terraces with eighty. A backyard with a long table and good food is probably the most common, and honestly one of the nicest.

There's no expectation to recreate a wedding. Most couples deliberately don't.

If you're thinking about it

You don't need a milestone year and you don't need a reason you can explain to anyone else. Wanting to is enough.

Tell me a bit about your story and what you're picturing, and we'll go from there.
